Things I Didn't Know

Don't worry, I'm not going to list ALL the things I don't know, that would take up way too much space. I was watching VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s the other night and I was surprised at how little of the trivia I actually knew. Of course, that could be because I wasn't at home looking through books learning about the bands and the songs and what they meant, I was too busy shaking my ass on the speakers. Or, maybe those brain cells were eaten up by all the Long Island Ice Teas.

Anyway, did you know:

That Robert Palmer died in September 2003? I had no idea!

That Devo is from Ohio? And "Whip It" has nothing to do with sado_masochism? And that original band members are working with Disney on a project band called Devo 2.0, where child performers sing their hits?

That "Little Red Corvette" isn't about a car at all? (Prince is talking about her hoo-ha.)

That Berlin broke up because co-founder John Crawford hated the song "Take My Breath Away" (from Top Gun) so much he refused to play it in concert?

That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are many more things I don't know.

  1. I knew a couple of those things, but not all of them. I should definitely be watching more VH1!

  2. I knew MOST of that stuff.
hehe, I was wondering who else was watching that show. Good stuff.

  3. I cried when Robert Palmer died. Truly.

  4. *Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees on their first US Tour. Remember, Jimi made it big in England first.

*The Mama's and Papas song Creeque Alley ("and everyone's getting fat but Mama Cass") was an ode to the street where inadvertantly Mama Cass Eliot joined the band. She had auditioned to join before but John Phillips didn't think she could hit the higher ranges. One Day Cass Eliot was walking down a place called Creeque Alley and was hit but a piece of something falling from a construction site. After being hit in the head she COULD hit the high ranges. The rest as they say is history.

*Speaking of Mama Cass, she died in the very same room in the very same apartment that Keith Moon, drummer from The Who did.

*Duran Duran is named for a character in the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella.

  5. Wow - you guys are good! I didn't know any of that! You're always good for some important facts, Donna! -Kym

  6. Funny... I downloaded a couple Devo CDs onto my iMac today and read about their start. Kent State boys, they are.

I recently learned that Diana Krall is married to Elvis Costello. I had no idea. And I had no idea Robert Palmer had died.

  7. Wait a minute: It's not about a car?

  8. Long Island Iced Teas! You know, for a while I was bartending parttime and everyone who asked for a LIIT I demanded an ID. It's such a kiddie drink.

  9. Did I sleep (or drink) through Robert Palmer's death? Seriously, shouldn't that be something I'd remember?

    I'm guessing I was drinking.
